[Swprograms] Podding Along - Issue 63

Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while âpower walkingâ (most) every other day. The âartâ of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by âpodding alongâ while Iâm plodding along my mind gets something to do along with my body. Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating programâs web site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn. Hereâs another in a continuing series of small samplings:

âRise of the Machines: The Lost History of Cybernetics; Goughâs Res Publicaâ
LATE NIGHT LIVE - ABC Radio National
Cyberspace, cyber attacks, cyber war are all now familiar terms in media discussions of computer technology and how it shapes our daily lives. Thomas Ridâs "Rise of the Machines, the Lost History of Cybernetics" sets out to ask, âWhat does 'cyber' even mean? And where does the idea come from?â
âGough Whitlam was interested not just in persuading us, but in asking us to share a vision and help build a political imagination,â according to Professor Anna Yeatman of the Whitlam Institute. Whitlam was a master of political rhetoric. And Professor Yeatman believes rhetoric is more than the art of using language, you need a coherent political vision. (54â)

âFrom Tree to Shining Treeâ
RADIOLAB - WNYC New York Public Radio
A forest can feel like a place of great stillness and quiet. But if you dig a little deeper, thereâs a hidden world beneath your feet as busy and complicated as a city at rush hour. In this story, a dog introduces us to a strange creature that burrows beneath forests, building an underground network where deals are made and lives are saved (and lost) in a complex web of friendships, rivalries, and business relations. Itâs a network that scientists are only just beginning to untangle and map, and itâs not only turning our understanding of forests upside down, itâs leading some researchers to rethink what it means to be intelligent.
