Re: [Swlfest] "Discussion list for the Winter SWL Fest"

Reckin' I should reply since I have been publicly taken to task. One of
the reasons the Fest was founded 19 years ago was to have a radio event
that featured radio, not an event, like the old ANARC conventions, that
revolved around "name" people. From Fest # 1, Bob, Kris and I invited
EVERYONE to the Fest, and when we invited a "big name," such as Ian, we
told them that they were just another participant and not a featured
item--we wanted to avoid the "I Touched Ian" mentality of the ANARC
days, and the big folks that came appreciated it. If folks want to
come, they come; if they are busy, they don't come. Hence, if they
WANTED to come, they would come (for three years, as I watched my family
slowly die out at Fest time, I very much WANTED to come to the Fest but
could not). We have been fortunate over the years in having a large
number of "big " folks attending the Fest, but, have you ever seen them
ADVERTISED as attending? Nope. It is not that kind of event--it is the
kind of event noted in the Fest history, a "place to just sit and talk
radio." I guess I am of the opinion that everyone who attends the Fest
is a "big" name.

The Fest is advertised over a wide spectrum of print and web outlets and
certainly is not a secret. Nonetheless, the Fest has issued additional
invitations for years to many people (including Glenn) and they are
certainly welcome if they would like to come.

And I agree with half of the last comment--Unity and Friendship is why
we founded the Fest many years ago and it has become THE major venue for
just that in the U.S. As for the last part of the statement, I am
afraid I had something read into my words that I did not say nor imply.
