A historical question  View Printable Version
Sunday, June 22 2025

HCDX
I continue to digitize my cassette collection (the oldest I've found so far
dates to 1979, but there are older ones, I'm sure). Today's question: One
tape is labelled 1/1996 RTE. It's in English. I don't have an older WRTH
available than 2000 here at the condo. I suspect that this was via a N
American relay. The date of transmission was 7 January 1996 (as per the
sports reports). Was this via WWCR on 12160 at 2000? That's what is
suggested in the 2000 WRTH. I do recall special broadcasts from RTE on SW
relays, but not the regular programming. Thanks for the help! 73, Walt

Subject: Re: [WOR] MID WINTER
As I mentioned earlier, I'm travelling today so couldn't record the broadcast at home in NB. So, I used the U. Twente SDR receiver and recorded 9575 and 12065 kHz. Signals were good with peaks of S9+10 on 9575 and S9+20 on 12065. 9575 had to be tuned in USB due to a utility (RTTY?) transmission on 9574 (source?) and still had a bit of interference. Like usual, the Ascension transmission started a bit late. Why? They started the sender at 21:25 and transmitted a carrier for a minute or so and then again at 21:27. But then they had a crash start after 21:30 and missed a sentence or two or three of the broadcast. 12065 was o.k. and started on time.

Good signal on 5960 via UAE with family messages from 2132. King's message at 2146.
Also heard at fair level on 12065 via Woofferton. 9575 via Ascension barely audible.

FRANCE TDF Issoudun bcast center location uses
16 x revolving Alliss rotating curtain antennas erected in about 1993 era

I’ll ask DF8DX OM Bodo technician, if there is an order from Nigeria still yet ?

Bodo who once (July 2009 til 2011 final) erected Abuja’s two antennas:
one revolving Ampegon (now parked on fix azimuth because of mis-usage by the local people)

and another 7 MHz easy dipole curtain too.

building for the new SW TX site of the External service of the Voice of
Nigeria.

In the transmitter building, there are currently three TSW2300 from
Thomson (250 kW, 5.9-26 MHz). They are full DRM ready.

Currently they have "only" the curtain antenna. Its a 16-dipole array with
azimuth of 0 degr and the other 16-dipole array with azimuth of 285 degr.
The beam can be switched to +15 degr, +30 degr and -15 degr, -30 degr.

There is another antenna in work. It will be a rotatable antenna ... its a
huge antenna with 32 dipoles, 16 for high and 16 for lowbands ...

No, V of Nigeria`s last frequency was 7255 for several years, now gone for a few years.
It was easily heard here from just before 0600. VON in DRM? Vaguely recall 15120.
I never heard it. The 8 languages currently claimed are certainly imaginary. Glenn

That is NOT the Alliss rotating curtain antenna that may still be in use at the Issoudun transmitter site?
Nigeria really needs to bring it's global radio reach back to life, and it needs a big financial and technical boost to make it happen.

Last we heard them, they were noted on 11770 a few years ago...

VON Plans Antenna Reactivation, Broader African Broadcast

The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mallam Jibrin Baba Ndace, has announced a strategic plan
to reposition the station as a leading continental broadcaster, beginning with the reactivation
of its rotating antenna to significantly enhance broadcast coverage across Africa.
This announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the
Deputy National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Bimbola Oyetunji, at VON headquarters in Abuja.

Mallam Ndace outlined his vision to reposition VON as a leading voice in Africa, highlighting plans to:

– Reactivate the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) shortwave transmitter & rotating antenna, the largest in Africa
– Add three new languages to its broadcast lineup: Chinese Mandarin, Bahasa Indonesia, and Portuguese, bringing the total to 11 languages
– Recruit freelance reporters across major cities in Africa
– Create high-quality content that will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria and Africa
– Highlight the importance of peace, security, and stability in Nigeria and Africa.
